Connectivity of Shimla Railway Station

Shimla and Kalka are connected through narrow gauge railway line. Kalka has many important trains running through it connecting major cities of India Kolkata, Jodhpur, New Delhi, Mumbai, and others. Kalka and Delhi has regular train services. In this railway sector, Ambala Cantonment is another important rail head that has connectivity with major cities and towns of India. The distance between Ambala and Kalka is about 85 km.

Kalka Shimla Railway

The Kalka-Shimla Railway was built in the year 1903. The railway line is one of the highest railway lines of the world and is located at an altitude of 2076 m. During the journey that starts from the foothills of Shivalik at Kalka, the journey covers the places Summer Hill, Salogra, Barog, Taradevi, Kandaghat, Solan and Dharampur in between. During summers, the clear sky, lush green surroundings and magnificent mountain ranges offer picturesque landscapes for the travelers. Winters offers snow-capped mountains and make the entire journey very charming.

The entire railway track between Shimla and Kalka is a narrow gauge line of 2 ft 6”. The journey gets accomplished after passing through 102 tunnels. The longest of these tunnels is the Barog which is about 1143.11 m long. Taradevi has another tunnel in this railway line. The entire railway track has about 864 bridges. The bridge between Kandaghat-Kanoh, bridge no. 493, is a bridge is built in 3 stages. This arch bridge is also popular as “Arch Gallery”.
