Scandal Point of Shimla

Shimla was the summer capital of the British era, where the significant part of the British officers and other people retreated in summer. So, it was natural that the romance and love should flourish in the beautiful and lavish green surroundings of Shimla. There were many romances and love affair between the single men and the ladies in Shimla. The center of the romance was the Mall Road, where people used to walk in beautiful mornings and the evenings. They met up with other people who were staying in the city. The Historic Tale About Scandal Point

The hub of social life, the Scandal point is located near the General Post Office which is constructed from Spartan bricks and the frames of timbers. The St. Andrew’s, the Church of Scotland is also located nearby. One of the essential features of the Scandal Point in those days was the Statue of the Mechanical Equestrian. One of the clever pieces of the mechanism, it use to salute and smile. It used to slap the horse on the occasional basis, when the horse showed the signs of undue restlessness and the activity.

Shimla has always been known as the city of the lovers as recounted by numerous Hindi movies. It all started with the establishment of the summer retreat of the Viceroy in Shimla. When he retreated to Shimla for vacation, most of his senior staff also stayed in Shimla for the attendance. The ladies followed their husbands and brothers to Shimla. They also brought their protégées and the single relations in hopes to make good matches in the beautiful surroundings of the Shimla. The Mall was the focus of love and intrigue. Where there is romance, love and intrigue, it is natural that there will be scandal and elopement at some point. The most prominent story of how the scandal point came to be named is related to the Indian Maharaja and a British lady. There was huge commotion when the flirtatious Maharaja of Patiala eloped with the daughter of British Viceroy. The furious Viceroy and the British authorities banned the entry of Maharaja of Patiala in Shimla.

He countered the move of British authorities by setting up the new summer capital at Chail, which is just 45 kms away from Shimla. The Scandal Point is located at the place where The Mall joins the Ridge road which is on the west side. It is the highest point of The Mall road. You can view snow clad mountain peaks and the views of the valley from this point. One of the prominent features of the Scandal Point is the statue of the famous freedom fighter, Lala Lajpat Rai.

How to Reach Scandal Point

The Scandal point is located at the mall Road, which is central location of the city.  It is completely accessible from the all parts of city. You can walk on the Mall Road to visit the Scandal Point. You can also take the state buses and the cabs to reach the Scandal Point.

Best Time to visit Scandal Point

Today, the Scandal Point is one of the main attractions for the Shimla visitors and the tourists including the honeymooners. It is also the main point from where you can see vast scenery including the valley and the snow clad mountains a wide vista and panorama. The best time to visit the Scandal Point is all the months excluding rainy season.
