Fauna at the Daranghati SanctuaryDaranghati Sanctuary was actually given the sanctuary status in 1974 on 27th March. The sanctuary is spread over an area of 16740 hectares. The sanctuary is situated in the upper parts of Shimla District. Rich Himalayan fauna as well as flora could be enjoyed by the visitors who come here to have a small break from their monotonous life style.

The place is full of green and the calm and cool atmosphere of this sanctuary is more than enough to refresh one’s body and mind and energize the person. Like any other sanctuary in India, visitors could enjoy wildlife watching and several other adventure activities like camping, trekking, hiking and walking.  Visitors must get in touch with the officials of the forest in order to enjoy smooth journey through the dense woods and many intersected roads. Forest officials who are posted at places like Sarahan, Dofda must be contacted before the visitors are planning to trek, hike or go for walking trails within this sanctuary area.

Medicinal herbs of different kinds are also found here. To enjoy the visit to this sanctuary the most, it is important to have trained and knowledgeable guide. Daranghati Sanctuary houses varieties of species and many of them are exclusively found in this Himalayan Region only. The species found in Daranghati Santuary are:

How to Reach Darangahti Sanctuary

Visitors from within the Himachal Pradesh as well as from other parts of north India can take roadways to reach Daranghati Sanctuary. Regular bus service both private and government buses, run at frequent interval from various other cities and towns like Chandigarh, Amritsar, Delhi etc. to Shimla.  From Shimla Town, buses, taxis, private cars are available in abundance to reach Daranghati.  Both AC and non-AC coaches are available.

To reach here via train, the nearest railway station is Shimla Railway Station. Shimla can be reached from Kalka via a narrow gauge train. The journey from Kalka to Shimla through a toy train is a journey which everyone cherishes and remembers forever. Single car train having glass roofs are also available to reach Shimla.

Shimla has an airport, Jubbarhatti airport, located about 23 km from the city center. Shimla has regular flights from major cities of India.

The Best Season to Visit Daranghati Sanctuary

Visitors must visit Daranghati Sanctuary from April to June (summer months) as the climate remains pleasant and cool at that time. During winters, visit to Daranghati Sanctuary can be enjoyed during October-November months.
